Potsdam
is a city in east Germany of approximately 150,000 people. After
the German reunification, Potsdam became the capital of the newly
re-established state of Brandenburg. It is situated on the Havel
River and is southwest of Berlin. Potsdam is thought to have been
founded in the 10th century as a Slavic village called “Poztupimi”.
It became the hunting residence of Frederick William I, elector
of Brandenburg in 1650.
Today, over 900 U.S. cities have twinned with more
than 1,300 cities in 92 countries worldwide. Potsdam, Germany paired
with Sioux Falls in 1990. This is the oldest such partnership between
a U.S. municipality and a city in the New Laender—the former
states of East Germany.
